Priddy’s Hard

Priddy’s Hard

Size

  • 2.89 ha (7.1 acres) plus 3.1 ha (7.6 acres) Ramparts

Description

The Heritage Area has spectacular views across Portsmouth Harbour with 264 metres of waterfront.

Historically it was used as an ammunition manufacturing facility and as a result the ‘Explosion’ Museum of Naval Fire Power is located within the site along with a number of Listed Buildings.

Priddy’s Hard is surrounded by the Ramparts that are a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Location/Access

Priddy’s Hard Heritage Area is adjacent to Portsmouth Harbour to the east and Forton Lake to the south.  It is bounded to the west by a residential development completed in 2007 and is connected to Royal Clarence Yard and Marina by the Forton Lifting Bridge.

The site is located at the northern end of Gosport’s Millennium Promenade, which runs along the waterfront and connects the site with the Gosport Ferry, town centre and Royal Naval Submarine Museum. Access by cyclists and pedestrians over the bridge is complemented by a new road link that connects the site to the A32, just two miles from Gosport town centre and five miles from Junction 11 of the M27.

Passenger boat trips link the Heritage Area to the Historic Dockyard in Portsmouth and the RN Submarine Museum at Haslar.

Options

Priddy’s Hard Heritage Area is one of the sites identified in the adopted Gosport Borough Local Plan that in addition to the Regeneration Areas also contribute to the regeneration of the Borough.

It is allocated for a mixture of uses with the potential for up to 100 dwellings and a range of uses to complement the ‘Explosion’ Musuem and benefit from the harbour side setting.  These include hotel/conferencing, food and drink outlets, small offices, craft workshops, plus education and/or community uses (approximately 1,400 sqm).  The passenger boat trip links provide considerable scope to expand the tourism potential of this site and the wider Portsmouth Harbour destination tourism offer.

Public open space is proposed for the Ramparts with a new park created that respects the heritage assets of the site.

Planning Status

Planning approval was granted in 2019 for phase one of the site’s regeneration.  The £30m scheme by Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust and Elite Homes will create 30 new homes, a new Coastal Forces Museum and a brewery with associated bar/restaurant.

The new housing includes 17 properties in the site’s southern demi-bastion and four, three-storey homes on the former cookhouse plot.

Initial refurbishment will be completed by the end of July 2020 with the Powder Monkey Brewery (on the E Magazine plot) due to be operational by October 2020.

The housing’s construction will begin in May/June 2020 and be completed by September 2021.  Holiday accommodation is also planned for the site.
