Royal Hospital Haslar

Size

23 ha (58 acres)

Description

Royal Hospital Haslar forms part of the wider Haslar Peninsula regeneration area that also includes the Blockhouse/Haslar Gunboat Yard site, plus Haslar Marine Technology Park that is home to QinetiQ.

When construction began in 1745 it was the first purpose built naval hospital for the sick and wounded in England.  The site closed as a military hospital in 2007 and the NHS ceased operating from the site in 2009.  It overlooks the Solent and has been designated as a Grade II Registered Park and includes a number of Listed Buildings and others of historical importance.

Subsequently the site has now been sold to private developers and planning consent has been granted for its redevelopment.

Location/access

The site is adjacent to the mouth of Portsmouth Harbour and has a frontage with the Solent and Haslar Lake.  It is connected to Gosport Town Centre by Halsar Road which crosses Haslar Creek and served from the south-west by Clayhill Road and Fort Road that provides direct access to Stokes Bay.

Options

The facilities of the site will largely be used for care purposes.  Due to the large amount of floorspace there will be a range of other uses that will be accommodated that are compatible with this health-related use.  There will also be other types of employment including office and workshop type uses linked to both medical uses and other important local business clusters. In addition there will be retail/community uses, leisure/cultural facilities and residential (up to 300 units).

Planning status

The Haslar Peninsula is identified in the adopted Gosport Borough Local Plan as Regeneration Area 3 (Policy LP6) as part of a vision to regenerate Gosport through the delivery of high quality sites. The Royal Hospital Haslar site will provide a new generation of health and care facilities as part of a mixed-use development.  This will bring back into use a nationally significant historical asset which will bring benefits to the community.

In September 2014 outline planning consent was granted for a mixed-use development (12/00591/Out) comprising of:

  • 286 residential units (C3)
  • 60 bed care home and 244 self-contained retirement units (C2)
  • offices and business units (B1)
  • health centre (D1)
  • hotel (C1)
  • tearooms and restaurant/bar (A3/A4)
  • convenience store (A1)
  • church, public hall and heritage centre (D1)

Subsequent detailed planning consents were granted in October 2015 (14/0049/dets) and December 2015 (15/00117/dets) with on-site works now underway.
