Supporting Gosport’s entrepreneurs and small businesses
Enterprising Gosport is a Gosport Borough Council led informal partnership established in 2014 with Enterprise First and Basepoint Gosport; and supported by local business leaders and professional services firms, the Gosport Discovery Centre, Caroline Dinenage MP, the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership and Start-Up Disruptors.
Its primary focus is to stage events locally each November to coincide with Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), the world’s largest campaign to promote entrepreneurship. However it also aims to deliver an ongoing programme of local business networking and learning activities across Gosport.
The established events programme in Gosport during GEW is made up of:
- Meet Your Local Experts seminar and networking event for start-ups and small businesses
- Gosport Informal Network (GIN) at The Boat House networking club for start-ups and small businesses (that also meets every 2 months throughout the year)
- Gosport Enterprise Fair with local entrepreneur keynote speakers, a business support exhibition and networking for start-ups and SMEs
For more details of the 2019 programme of events for week commencing the 18th November please see GEW 2019 & Gosport Enterprise Fair 2019.

Award winning entrepreneur and small business engagement
Over 400 business start-ups and small businesses participated in Gosport’s GEW programme since 2014. This success in engaging with local businesses and highlighting the advice and support available to them to start and grow has been formally recognised by the Federation of Small Businesses.
As a result of leading the local partnership delivering the GEW 2016 programme Gosport Borough Council was the joint winner of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Most Innovative Programme, Campaign or Project for the FSB Local Authority Small Business Friendly Awards 2017. Establishing the Enterprising Gosport partnership and staging the first GEW programme in Gosport also contributed towards Gosport Borough Council winning the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Best All Round Small Business Friendliness award in 2015.
Meet Your Local Experts
Local professional services firm representatives, many of whom are small business owners too, share their top “do’s and don’ts” on starting and running a business – highlighting why taking professional advice should be seen as an investment in and not a cost to a business.

Gosport Enterprise Fair
The inaugural Gosport Enterprise Fair in 2016 was hosted by Caroline Dinenage MP for Gosport with support from the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership, British Marine, X-Forces and Gosport Borough Council. The keynote speakers were local entrepreneurs and business support organisation representatives with attendees also able to network with each other and business support organisations that exhibited at the event.
From 2017 onwards the keynote speaker focus has been on local entrepreneurs and at GEF 2017 Masterchef 2012 winner Shelina Permalloo talked about founding her Lakaz Marman restaurant. The business support organisation networking exhibition continues to be an important element of GEF, enabling start-ups and SMEs to find out more about the assistance available to them.

Gosport Informal Network (GIN) @ The Boat House
Many of the GEW 2014 event attendees were keen to continue meeting on a regular basis and as a result Enterprise First and Gosport Borough Council established the Gosport Informal Network (GIN) @ The Boat House.
This is a free networking club for those that are thinking of starting or already run a small business in Gosport and the surrounding area. It now meets every two months on a Thursday morning at the Boat House Cafe in Gosport Marina. See Gosport Informal Networking (GIN) on Eventbrite for more details. It is free to attend and all that is asked is that you purchase your own drinks and/or food, as required.
