Boost your tech skills on the Google bus

Residents and business people in Gosport will be able to boost their computer skills for free – in a double-decker Google bus.

The company’s Digital Garage Bus is a mobile version of its Digital Garage – a training centre it opened this month in Commercial Road, Portsmouth.

The bus is stopping in Gosport for four days this month to provide advice and support to local residents and businesses. It will be offering free courses and one-to-one coaching to help people gain confidence online, boost their career or grow their business. There’s no need to book – anyone interested can just turn up.

The bus is visiting Gosport thanks to a partnership with Gosport Borough Council and Jobcentre Plus. Its timetable will be:

  • 5 November, 10am–4pm, Gosport High Street (outside Argos) – help for residents
  • 14 November, 9.30am–4.30pm, Basepoint car park, Aerodrome Road – help for pre-start-ups, start-ups and other small businesses. Sessions include: social media strategy 10am–11.30am, digital marketing strategy 12pm–1.30pm, getting started with digital advertising 2pm–3.30pm
  • 19 November, 9.30am–4.30pm, Basepoint car park, Aerodrome Road – help for pre-start-ups, start-ups and other small businesses. Sessions include: digital marketing strategy 10am–11.30am, social media strategy 12pm–1.30pm, writing for social media 2pm–3.30pm

Cllr Stephen Philpott, who chairs the council’s Economic Development Board, said: “This is a great opportunity for Gosport people to get more confident online, transform their CV or improve their job prospects. It is also ideal for local businesses looking to use the power of the internet to expand and improve their presence online. The Google Digital Garage Bus is a unique place for helping people to develop new skills and grow their business.”

Leone Hill, local Jobcentre Plus employer and partnership manager, said: “Digital skills are so important now in all aspects of our lives. Whether it’s looking for a new job, keeping in touch with family and friends, getting the best deals or growing a small business, they’re vital. We urge everyone to come along and find out more about the help and support on offer.”

Ronan Harris, managing director for Google UK and Ireland, said: “We firmly believe everyone should be able to benefit from the opportunities that technology brings and we want to give people the skills they need to grow their confidence, career or business.”

The Digital Garage and Bus initiative is run on behalf of Google by the UK charity Good Things Foundation.

The Google Digital Garage Bus’s presence in Gosport coincides with Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), which starts on 18 November. Gosport Borough Council leads a local partnership that will be running free workshops, seminars and networking events aimed at helping pre-start, start-up and small businesses.
